Travel Guide – Discovering Ninh Binh, Vietnam

Ninh Binh is a 2-3 hour drive from Hanoi. In the past, Ninh Binh was a bit overlooked, but more and more tourists have discovered the beautiful natural gem called the new Halong Bay or “Halong Bay on land”.

The area is best known for boat trips on the rivers to Tam Coc and Trang An. The nature is fantastic with limestone mountains scattered around the landscape, which mainly consists of beautiful rice fields.

Tam Coc is more popular to foreign tourists, however the writer likes Trang An better. It is more magnificent and clearly has the greatest experience. The boats are small, and the the two-hour trip passes lakes, caves and temples.

Although Ninh Binh is relatively new on the map for foreign tourists, many Vietnamese visit the area. In other words, it’s not a place you can have for yourself.

Cycling is also popular in the area. The landscape is flat in most places, and it is a good idea to not take the main road and instead cycle on the large path network between the rice fields.

A bike ride takes you past cozy villages and you can visit Thung Nham Bird Garden. At Trang An there is also an old palace, which can also be recommended to visit if time allows.

Ninh Binh can be visited both on a day trip from Hanoi and as a 2-day trip with 1 overnight stay. You can book the excursion in Hanoi or from home. We also have Ninh Binh on the program – get a free and non-binding travel proposal to Vietnam here.

Two travel tips for Ninh Binh

  1. Ninh Binh has the best weather from November to March, but if you want to experience the screaming green rice fields, you can visit the area before the fall in September. If you come in the dry season, the landscape is still beautiful and magnificent though!
  2. Remember cash – there are ATMs in Ninh Binh, but if you live in the country or in Tam Coc, it is far to the nearest ATM.

Overnight in Ninh Binh

Ninh Binh itself, like so many other major cities in Vietnam, is noisy and not very charming. In return, around Tam Coc you have the opportunity to live scenically with views of rice fields and limestone mountains.

The selection of accommodations is relatively large, but you should treat yourself to staying in one of the hotels In the middle of nowhere, where it is great to sit on the terrace in the evening and look out over the rice fields.

You can book hotels in Ninh Binh here.
